GTA 6's marketing cycle is the longest in Rockstar's history — the numbers
Rockstar announced GTA VI on 4 December 2023 and releases it on 19 November 2026: 1,081 days, the longest announcement-to-release cycle of its last three major games (GTA V: 693 days, RDR2: 738 days). The gap between Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 was 519 days, against 343 for RDR2. On its own history, Rockstar ships a launch trailer between 8 and 19 days before release.
Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI on 4 December 2023 and releases it on 19 November 2026. Count the days between those two dates and you get 1,081. No game Rockstar has shipped in the last fifteen years took that long to travel from a press release to a store shelf.
That number does not appear in any of the coverage I read while checking this, because it requires putting three timelines side by side. So here they are.
The three cycles, measured
- GTA V — announced 25 October 2011, released 17 September 2013: 693 days.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 — announced 18 October 2016, released 26 October 2018: 738 days.
- GTA VI — announced 4 December 2023, released 19 November 2026: 1,081 days.
GTA VI's cycle is 56 percent longer than GTA V's and 46 percent longer than Red Dead 2's. Rockstar's own most recent release, Red Dead Redemption 2, took a little over two years; GTA VI takes a little under three.
The gap nobody measured: 519 days between trailers
Announcing on 4 December 2023 with Trailer 1, then waiting until 6 May 2025 for Trailer 2 is a 519-day silence — seventeen months. Take-Two's own press release confirms the date of the second trailer, which landed four days after the company pushed the release back to 26 May 2026 (Reuters, 2 May 2025).
For comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2 went from its first trailer on 20 October 2016 to its second on 28 September 2017: 343 days. GTA VI's inter-trailer gap is 176 days longer, and it is the longest Rockstar has ever asked its audience to sit through.
Both gaps fall in the same place in the cycle, which is worth noting: in both cases the second trailer arrived days after a delay was announced. Whatever else it does, the trailer is used to absorb the disappointment of a pushed date.
Two delays, and the second one was longer
GTA V was delayed once. Red Dead Redemption 2 was delayed twice, from autumn 2017 to spring 2018 and then to 26 October 2018.
GTA VI has now been delayed twice as well: to 26 May 2026, then to 19 November 2026. But the shape differs. Red Dead's final delay left 267 days before launch. GTA VI's final delay, announced on 6 November 2025, left 378 days — four months more warning than Red Dead 2 gave.
That is arguably the one place where the GTA VI cycle has been kinder to its audience: the last date change happened early enough that the remaining wait could be counted on one hand's worth of months, and it has now been 322 days since, with no further movement.
What the past says about the final weeks
There are 56 days left as I write this. Looking at how Rockstar closed its last two cycles:
- GTA V released its final pre-launch trailer on 29 August 2013, 19 days before release.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 released its launch trailer on 18 October 2018, 8 days before release.
The pattern is a launch trailer inside the final three weeks, and often inside the final ten days. Nothing in Rockstar's behaviour suggests GTA VI will break it, though it is a pattern, not a promise: the company has said nothing about its remaining schedule, and we do not publish dates nobody has confirmed.
What is measurable is that the promotional runway is now shorter than the gap between Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 was. The silence that defined 2024 and early 2025 is over; whatever comes next will arrive quickly.
