GTA Online is 13 today: the birthday hat, and why most players will not get it
GTA Online turns 13 on October 1, 2026, and Rockstar has granted a black-and-green number-13 party hat plus firework ammo to characters created on launch day, October 1, 2013, per RockstarINTEL. The reward is per character, not per account: a character made on October 1, 2014 gets its twelfth hat today, and a player who created a character this year gets nothing until 2027. The gift: a number-13 hat, and a narrow guest list
GTA Online turned 13 on October 1, 2026, and Rockstar marked it the way it has since 2023: with a party hat. RockstarINTEL reports that logging in with a character created 13 years ago grants a new black-and-green hat carrying the number 13, along with firework ammo to use in free roam. Both items arrive automatically — there is no challenge attached.
The hat itself is cosmetic, and that is the point. It is one of the few items in GTA Online that cannot be bought, traded or earned by playing, and it marks the account's age rather than its progress. With it equipped, other players can read how long a character has existed simply by looking at it (RockstarINTEL).
The eligible group is the smallest it has ever been. Only characters created on October 1, 2013 — day one of a launch RockstarINTEL describes as ambitious but notorious for server problems — receive hat 13 today. Everyone else receives the same design on the anniversary of their own character.
The hat tracks your character, not the calendar
Rockstar does not hand out these gifts on the game's birthday alone. Since the system was introduced, the rule has been that a character receives one new hat per year of its own life, on its creation date. That is why the 13th hat is not a general October 1 giveaway: it targets the accounts that have never been reset in 13 years.
The practical consequence is a hard cap. A character created on October 1, 2014 reaches 12 years today and receives hat number 12, not number 13; a character created in 2020 receives its sixth hat this year. RockstarINTEL's guide to the 2026 gift spells that out and adds a second layer to the system: party outfits, with a bronze version granted at five years and a silver version at ten.
Finding your own date takes three steps, and RockstarINTEL details all of them. Open the pause menu, go to the Stats tab, scroll to the General section listed on the right, and the character creation date sits there. The hats themselves live under Party Hats in the Hats section of the wardrobe or the Interaction Menu.
Rockstar's own files put the hats in December 2023, not 2024
One detail in this year's post is worth checking against RockstarINTEL's own archive. The October 1, 2026 article dates the party hats to "the Chop Shop update in late 2024"; the site's contemporaneous piece of December 14, 2023 reports the opposite, describing the gifts as part of "the winter update titled Chop Shop" and listing ten hats and two suits as already earnable at that moment.
Rockstar's patch note, quoted in that December 2023 post, is the part that explains the volume: "Players will now receive a gift in game on their character's birthday (creation date). These gifts will be given retroactively." Ten hats were therefore back-issued at once, roughly a decade after GTA Online went live, which is why a launch-day character logged into ten of them in a single session in December 2023.
Ten hats, then eleven, then thirteen
The number of hats in circulation is a reliable yearly marker, because each edition adds exactly one. RockstarINTEL counted ten hats and two outfits in December 2023, and flagged the same joke in both its 2023 and 2026 coverage: a player whose original character had been granted 15 hats by mistake, which suggests the designs for later anniversaries were already sitting in the files.
Gurugamer's report of October 2, 2024 records the next step, an eleventh hat in purple issued to characters created in October 2013. The 2026 gift is the thirteenth of the set, in black and green, which leaves hat 12 — the 2025 design — as the one colour that is still undocumented in any of the three write-ups.
49 days: the last anniversary before GTA VI
The date is what gives this year's hat its edge. GTA Online went live on October 1, 2013, 14 days after GTA V's September 17, 2013 release, and GTA VI arrives on November 19, 2026 — 4,797 days after GTA Online started, and 49 days after this anniversary. Rockstar Actu notes that the original launch covered PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, two platforms the live game has long since left behind.
That places the next hat on the other side of the sequel. The 14th anniversary falls on October 1, 2027, 316 days after GTA VI's release, and Rockstar has said it intends to keep supporting the current GTA Online rather than replacing it at launch. If that holds, the 2027 hat will be the first one awarded to a game that already has a newer sibling on the shelf.
What is not confirmed
RockstarINTEL does not say whether the hat is lost if a player fails to log in on the exact anniversary date, nor whether the gift is granted retroactively on the next login — the wording of the 2026 post supports either reading, and the December 2023 patch note only establishes that the earliest hats were back-dated. The same uncertainty covers the party outfits: bronze at five years and silver at ten are confirmed, but a gold version at 15 years has never been announced.
