GTA VI hits 29% US purchase intent — Circana's highest ever, and what it means in copies
Circana reported on October 28, 2026 that 29% of US console and PC gamers intend to buy GTA VI, the highest purchase intent the firm has recorded for any game, 22 days before the November 19 launch. On a roughly 100-million-player US base that implies about 29 million copies, while Sensor Tower counted 6.08 million US digital pre-orders worth $594 million on October 13 — roughly 21% of the intent…
The short answer: 29%, and it is a record
Twenty-nine percent of console and PC gamers in the United States say they intend to buy Grand Theft Auto VI. The figure comes from Circana's PlayerPulse tracker, which published it on October 28, 2026 and described it as "the highest level recorded for a video game" — making GTA VI the most anticipated release in the research firm's tracking history, 22 days before its November 19 launch (Circana).
That is a survey number, not a sales chart. It measures what players say they plan to do, months into a pre-order campaign that has already broken records. The interesting question is not whether 29% is big, but what it is worth once converted into units and checked against the orders that exist.
What "purchase intent" measures — and what it does not
Circana's PlayerPulse tracks stated purchase plans among US console and PC gamers. It does not count transactions, and it says nothing about players who only game on mobile, or about the 95% of the world that lives outside the United States. Circana has also not published the size of the panel behind the 29%, nor the previous record it beat, so the figure cannot be used to rank GTA VI against a specific past launch.
Mat Piscatella, Circana's video games industry analyst, framed it in cultural rather than statistical terms: "Grand Theft Auto VI represents a rare cultural and commercial moment for the video game industry," he said. "Players have been waiting 13 years for a sequel to Grand Theft Auto V, and demand is expected to extend beyond software sales to include consoles, accessories, and gaming subscriptions as consumers prepare for launch" (Circana).
Turning 29% into copies
US console and PC gamers are hard to count precisely. Wccftech, reporting the Circana release, estimates the pool at "around 100 million". Apply the 29% to that base and you get roughly 29 million copies in the United States alone — a calculation absent from the coverage that carried the percentage.
The revenue follows from the price. At the $79.99 standard edition, 29 million US copies represent about $2.32 billion. At the $97.70 per copy that Sensor Tower's pre-order data implies — a blended figure lifted by the $99.99 Ultimate Edition — the same volume represents roughly $2.83 billion. Both are full-price, US-only, no-discount ceilings: useful as an order of magnitude, useless as a forecast.
A fifth of it is already on the books
Some of that intent has already converted. Sensor Tower estimated 6.08 million digital pre-orders in the United States worth $594 million as of October 13, 2026, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz — which works out at $97.70 per copy.
Against the 29-million ceiling, those 6.08 million pre-orders cover about 21% of the intent pool, 37 days before launch. If the stated intent holds, roughly 22.9 million US copies still have to be converted in the final weeks — which is the number retailers are actually planning shelf space and midnight stock around, not the 29% itself.
Where the forecasts do not quite line up
Other analysts are working from the same demand and reaching different totals. One Newzoo model estimates up to 51 million units globally by the end of launch week, and Piper Sandler reckons up to 45 million on launch day alone, both reported by Wccftech.
Those numbers sit awkwardly next to a 29-million US projection. The United States usually accounts for a large slice of a global console launch; if it really delivered 29 million copies, the worldwide total would need to land well above 51 million to stay consistent. Something has to give: either the 100-million base is too generous, or stated intent overstates what people do at checkout, or the global models are conservative. Circana does not publish the data needed to settle it.
GTA V is the only real baseline
The comparison that does hold up is with the predecessor. Circana states that GTA V is the best-selling premium video game in its US tracked history in both unit and dollar terms, and that it has remained among the top 20 best-selling games in the United States for 13 consecutive years, from 2013 through 2025.
More striking for a 13-year-old title: in 2025, GTA V still ranked third in total active users across the PlayStation and Xbox ecosystems (Circana). No other premium game in the current generation has shown that kind of retention, which is the real reason a 29% intent figure is being treated as credible rather than optimistic.
Hardware is the second-order effect
Piscatella expects the demand to spill into hardware. "Many consumers who have yet to upgrade to a current-generation console may choose to purchase a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series specifically to play the title," he said, adding that GTA VI "will be a major driver of software sales, hardware upgrades, and gaming-related tech purchases throughout the fourth quarter" (Circana).
The early evidence is modest rather than explosive. Circana data reported in September showed combined US PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales up 14% week-on-week in the week the Extended Look aired — a double-digit percentage that still amounted to fewer than 8,000 extra consoles.
What actually matters before November 19
The 29% is best read as an upper bound on demand, not a shipment forecast. The measurable checkpoints between now and launch are the next Sensor Tower pre-order update and Circana's own November and December US charts, which will show how much of the stated intent turned into a transaction in the first weeks.
If conversion stays near the 21% already locked in by pre-orders, the record intent figure becomes a very large but not implausible US launch. If it climbs sharply in the final days, the 45 to 51 million global models will look conservative.
