GTA 6's “hundreds” of interiors: what Rockstar actually said, and why 700 is not one of its numbers

GTA 6's “hundreds” of interiors: what Rockstar actually said, and why 700 is not one of its numbers
TL;DR

Rockstar says GTA 6 has “hundreds” of enterable interiors: Jennifer Kolbe, Aaron Garbut, Phil Hooker and Rob Nelson used that word to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier in the Businessweek cover story published October 14, 2026, describing a gas station you can rob without being detected.

The short answer

Rockstar has said GTA 6 contains "hundreds" of enterable interiors. It has never given a total, a share of buildings that can be opened, or a list of locations. The 700 figure you may have seen is not a Rockstar number: it traces to a single outlet in early September 2026. With 23 days left before the November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, "hundreds" is as precise as the studio has been willing to get.

What the studio actually said

The strongest version of the claim is on the record. In Bloomberg Businessweek's November cover story on the making of GTA 6, published October 14, 2026, Jason Schreier quotes head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe, art director Aaron Garbut, and leads Phil Hooker and Rob Nelson. GamingBolt picked the passage up on October 19: "There are so many of these little interiors — hundreds of them — that you can go and explore." Rockstar walked the reporter through entering a gas station without being detected and leaving with the cash without raising an alarm — context that matters as much as the number.

That is a design statement disguised as a quantity. Consolepulse made the same point on October 20: "a room can support observation, entry, a crime and a possible escape rather than functioning only as a backdrop for a cutscene".

Three phrasings, one missing number

Garbut had already circled the subject a fortnight earlier. In Game Informer issue 382, published September 29, 2026, he said the team had "hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors", to the point that "you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out". That is the closest thing to a design rationale Rockstar has offered in print.

Rob Nelson, asked about buildings during a Rockstar North preview, answered in the same register. French magazine TroisCouleurs quotes him saying, in PlanetGTA6's translation: "You can enter many buildings. A lot of them. The number is enormous." Three separate phrasings across three weeks — critical mass, hundreds, enormous — and not one figure between them.

Where 700 comes from

On September 5, 2026, the outlet All.gg reported that Nelson, asked about "around 700 interiors", said he did not know that number but confirmed "hundreds". PlanetGTA6, which traced the claim, flags it plainly: one source only. Consolepulse's October 20 piece is equally direct — the Bloomberg remarks do not validate the roughly 700 enterable buildings rumour, and interiors are not buildings anyway. Several distinct spaces can sit inside one building; another building may hold a single accessible room.

The "40% of buildings enterable" figure circulating alongside the property-buying leak deserves the same caution: no outlet has tied it to a Rockstar statement, and the studio has confirmed neither a number nor a percentage. Treat both as fan arithmetic until launch.

The arithmetic, done properly

ComicBook's Tyler Fischer, writing on October 25, put the comparison in numbers: GTA V "didn't even launch with 100. It launched with about 70 to 80", against "about 20 enterable interiors" in 2002's Vice City, none of them genuinely interactive. Rockstar never published a figure for GTA V, so 70 to 80 is an estimate — but the only baseline in circulation.

At the floor of "hundreds", 200 interiors against 80 is 2.5 times GTA V. At its ceiling, 900 against 70 is 12.9 times. The interesting figure is neither: it is the density. Garbut told Game Informer the map is around twice the size of GTA V's, so 200 to 900 interiors spread over two GTA V-sized areas works out to 100 to 450 interiors per GTA-V-equivalent area, against 70 to 80 in 2013 — between 1.25 and 6.4 times denser. Even the most conservative reading of Rockstar's own word raises the interior density of the world.

Interior, enterable, robbable: three different things

None of this means every door opens. IGN's reading of the series history is that GTA V offered the protagonists' homes, a few shops and set-piece locations such as the police station, usually behind loading screens and often locked to a mission state. GTA 6's Extended Look already shows interiors inside and outside missions.

But Rockstar has not said that every interior can be robbed, or that access is permanent. Shops, mission spaces and safehouses can follow different rules, and access may depend on story progress, activities or a specific interaction. The gas station example proves one interior was built for a crime; it does not prove the other several hundred were.

Why the gap changes the calculation

GTA V launched on September 17, 2013, on hardware designed for 2005-era consoles. GTA 6 arrives November 19, 2026 — 4,811 days later, or 13.2 years, the longest wait between two numbered entries in the series. In that window the interiors budget stopped competing with a 512 MB console generation — the least glamorous explanation for the jump, and probably the most accurate.

Money is the other variable. Kolbe used the Bloomberg feature to push back on the claim that GTA 6 cost more than the $1.5 billion spent on Dubai's Burj Khalifa. The studio will not put a budget on the record; it will say "hundreds" about rooms.

What is still unknown

No total, no percentage of enterable buildings, no list of what is accessible in free roam. The previews behind every quote above ran in July 2026 on a preliminary build, so the final game may differ. The robbery question — does the criminal economy reach every interior, or only a curated subset? — will decide whether hundreds of rooms feel like a city or a level select. The answer arrives November 19.
