GTA VI map: Vice City and Leonida — everything confirmed so far
The GTA VI map explained: back to Vice City in the state of Leonida. Everything confirmed about locations, scale, airports and wildlife — Rockstar now puts Leonida at about twice the size of GTA 5's map, split into six named regions.
Vice City is back
GTA VI returns to Vice City, Rockstar's take on Miami and South Florida, set in the fictional state of Leonida. The Extended Look confirmed the skyline, the beaches and the neon-soaked boulevards that made Vice City legendary in 2002's Vice City.
What is confirmed about the map
- Scale: Rockstar describes GTA VI's map as its largest open world ever created, and on September 29, 2026, art director Aaron Garbut gave it a comparative figure in Game Informer's issue 382 — about twice the size of GTA 5's map.
- Vice City metro: the city itself, with recognizable Miami-inspired districts.
- Airport: Vice City International Airport appears in the Extended Look — players spotted a Mammoth Patriot (classic military SUV) on the tarmac during the trailer.
- Wildlife zones: more than 170 animal species across Leonida's swamps, forests, coast and open sea, from manatees and flamingos to alligators. Hunting is still unconfirmed as a system; the species list is tracked on our GTA 6 wildlife page.
- Real-world links: the game's world is heavily inspired by Miami — some real Miami landmarks and even the airport's real-life expansion plans have been discussed in the community as influences.
Districts and areas hinted so far
Based on trailers, screenshots and Rockstar's official looks, expect at least: the downtown/business district, beachfront areas with resorts, the airport zone, rural Leonida with swamps and farmland, and possibly offshore islands.
How big will it be?
Rockstar's own figure arrived on September 29, 2026: Aaron Garbut, the studio's art director, told Game Informer that Leonida is its biggest map yet "by some degree" and around twice the size of GTA 5's — with no square kilometres attached. Community reconstructions land at roughly 160–170 km² for Leonida including water, working from the 75–80 km² usually cited for GTA 5's Los Santos; treat that as an estimate, because "twice" does not say whether shorelines and open ocean are counted.
What remains unknown
- The full official map (Rockstar has not published one yet)
- Whether Vice City expands over time (like GTA Online content)
- How the six now-confirmed regions sit on the map, and how many districts each one holds
Update — 2026-09-29: Rockstar puts a size on Leonida — and names six regions
For two years, the size of Leonida was a community estimate. On September 29, 2026, Game Informer's issue 382 put Rockstar's own words behind it. Art director Aaron Garbut tells the magazine that Leonida is the studio's biggest map yet "by some degree", around twice the size of GTA 5's, with more density, detail, interaction and interiors — a line carried the same day by VGC, VICE and Insider Gaming.
No square kilometres come with it. Garbut gives no surface figure, so any area in circulation is a reconstruction rather than a Rockstar statement, and "twice" leaves open whether shorelines and open ocean are counted. On the essential point, though, the ambiguity of "the largest world we've ever built" is gone: the studio now expresses it as a comparison.
The story also confirms how the state is built. Leonida is split into six primary regions, per VGC: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Grassrivers is the Everglades-style wetland, Port Gellhorn a faded tourist coast, Ambrosia an industrial heartland held by a biker gang, and Mount Kalaga a northern park built around wildlife, drawing on the Florida-Georgia border. RockstarINTEL adds ATV trails, mud parks, demolition derbies, motocross, farms, ranches and abandoned tourist attractions to the list of what sits inside them.
On interiors, Garbut's quote is the one to keep: the team "hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors", to the point that "you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out". One of the 12 screenshots published with the issue shows downtown Vice City at night, with searchlights sweeping up from the Sahara Arena — the venue GTA Intel identifies as the game's counterpart of Miami's Kaseya Center, the arena whose real roof has carried Rockstar's "Welcome to Vice City" sign since September 22, 2026.
What has not changed: Rockstar has still published no official map of Leonida, and the game is 51 days away — November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why it matters
For players waiting on GTA VI, the map is the single biggest unknown left. Rockstar has confirmed the setting — the state of Leonida, with Vice City as its main city — and described the world as its largest open world ever created, but it has not published an official map. That means every district, road and wildlife zone discussed so far comes from trailers, screenshots and official looks rather than a definitive layout, so expectations should stay measured until Rockstar shows more.
This also fits what Rockstar has already confirmed about the game itself: GTA VI is developed by Rockstar Games and published by Take-Two Interactive, and it releases on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, following Lucia and Jason. The scale of Leonida matters because it shapes how that story is paced — an 80-hour campaign spread across city, countryside and coastline needs a map big enough to support it, which is exactly the promise Rockstar has made.
