GTA 6 has no paper map in the box: Rockstar gives it away digitally, then sells a $0.99 printed one
The boxed edition of GTA VI contains a download code, no disc and no paper map, which no mainline GTA has done before. Rockstar confirmed on 3 November 2026 that a printable map of Leonida and a cover-art poster will be a free download on its official website on release day, 19 November.
Grand Theft Auto VI no longer comes with a paper map. The boxed edition holds a download code instead of a disc, and with the disc went the folded map of Leonida that every mainline GTA has shipped since 2001. Rockstar confirmed on 3 November 2026 that it will fill the gap twice: a free printable map and cover-art poster on its official website from release day, and a double-sided printed map on sale shortly after launch for $0.99.
Both details come from the same Newswire post that moved pre-loading to 10 November. Rockstar led with the download date and the 212 GB figure; the map sat at the end, and most coverage of the pre-load announcement skipped it entirely.
What is actually inside the box
The physical edition of GTA VI is a code in a plastic case. There is no disc to install from, so there is nothing to print a map on the reverse of the sleeve and nothing to fold into the case. The package still costs $79.99, the same as the digital Standard Edition, and it still reaches retailers on 12 November — a week before launch — so that buyers can redeem and pre-load.
Rockstar Actu, the French fan site that flagged the change on 3 November, puts it plainly: the semi-physical edition has no traditional poster-format map of the game world. The map did not disappear by a decision about maps; it went with the disc.
The free map arrives on release day
According to VGC, Rockstar will add, on the day the game releases, a printable cover-art poster and a map of Leonida as a free digital download on the official Rockstar website. That means 19 November 2026, the same day the servers open.
One consequence follows, and Rockstar does not state it: nobody outside the studio holds the full layout of Leonida on paper before launch, because the printable map does not exist until the game does. It cannot leak early the way a shipped poster can.
Rockstar has not said what resolution the download will be, which decides whether a home print is legible or a blur. A map of a world twice the size of GTA V's, printed readably, also means a large-format sheet rather than a desktop printer.
The $0.99 paper map, and why the price is the point
VGC reports that a double-sided physical version — the map on one side, the cover artwork on the other — will be available to buy shortly after launch from the Rockstar Store. It costs $0.99 on its own, or is included as a free gift with any other purchase from the store.
A $0.99 price on a printed, double-sided, shipped object is not a price that covers its own production and postage. It is a promotional price, and the second half of the offer says so: the map is free the moment you buy anything else. Buying the map alone means paying shipping that outweighs the item, which is why the sensible way to get one is to attach it to another order — a T-shirt, a mug, the soundtrack, anything.
Rockstar has not given a date beyond "shortly after launch". Anyone planning to order one should not expect it in hand on 19 November, and the digital download is the only version guaranteed for launch day.
No mainline GTA has shipped without a map
GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV and GTA V all put a folded map of their city in the box, and Red Dead Redemption 2 did the same in 2018 with its own map of the frontier. For a series whose world is the product, the paper map has been the one physical object that carried the geography out of the console and onto a wall.
That makes GTA VI the first mainline entry in the series to launch without one, and the $0.99 sheet the first map Rockstar has ever sold separately at this level.
If the sheet is the same size, the scale drops by 29%
Rockstar has confirmed that Leonida is roughly twice the area of GTA V's San Andreas map. If the printed map keeps the dimensions of the GTA V poster — which Rockstar has not confirmed — then the same sheet has to cover twice the ground, and the linear scale falls by the square root of two: about 1.41, or 29% less map per centimetre.
That is a conditional calculation, not a measurement, and it matters for one practical reason. A denser map on the same paper is harder to read, which pushes the printed version towards a larger format, and pushes the digital one towards the screen it was always better suited to. Anyone comparing the two should check the printed dimensions before ordering, not the price.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Rockstar confirmed on 3 November 2026 that a printable map of Leonida and a cover-art poster will be a free download on release day, that a double-sided printed map costs $0.99 or comes free with another Rockstar Store purchase, and that code-in-box copies reach retailers on 12 November. The pre-load timing and the 212 GB figure belong to the same post and are covered in our separate piece.
Not confirmed: the printed map's dimensions, the resolution of the digital file, the exact sale date of the physical map, and whether either map shows anything the in-game map does not. One number in circulation is wrong — Rockstar Actu's article puts the download at 210 GB, while Eurogamer and VGC both quote Rockstar's own figure of up to 212 GB. The 210 GB reading matches an earlier PlayStation Store backend estimate and appears to have been carried over by mistake.
