GTA 6: Rockstar hand-crafts every room — down to the photos on the wall

GTA 6: Rockstar hand-crafts every room — down to the photos on the wall

No room left unthought

Rockstar keeps feeding details about the scale of its open world, and the latest one may be the most ambitious yet. In an interview with The New York Times, art director Aaron Garbut said that every single room in GTA 6 was hand-crafted by the team — no space was left without deliberate thought.

> "Every room in the game, somebody thought about this. Who's sitting where, what they're drinking, the marks that are left on the table."

Garbut went further, describing a level of interior design that sounds closer to a film set than a video game: the pictures on the wall show the people who live in that room, with their tattoos on their arms and their family behind them. "That whole thing has been made, and built, and photographed, and placed in this random room in a random building in a huge city, in a world," he told the newspaper.

The RDR2 connection

The approach is a direct continuation of what Rockstar achieved with Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, according to Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North. "Once we managed to accomplish that level of interactive fidelity in a more sparsely populated version of America 100 years ago," Nelson said, "we were already imagining what it would be like if we could do that at the scale and density of a modern environment."

In other words: the living-world philosophy of RDR2 — every shelf stocked, every character with a routine — is being transplanted into the density of a modern Vice City. Tech4Gamers reports the game also features significantly larger interiors than previous entries, with small elements such as NPC placement and furniture meticulously decided by the team.

One detail among many

The comments come from the same interview that produced the confirmed figure of over 600,000 NPC animations — more than ten times GTA V's library — and the revelation that a dedicated team art-directed every single pedestrian. Together, they paint a consistent picture: Rockstar is betting heavily on density and believability rather than pure map size.

The Chinese press picked up the same story on August 31, with Sohu highlighting the hand-crafted indoor scenes and what it called the "烟火气" (liveliness) of the spaces — the sense that these rooms feel inhabited, not decorated.

A word of caution

As with all pre-release statements, this is Rockstar in marketing mode: the claims are official, but the final game may differ in details, and "hand-crafted" remains a promise to be judged at release. Still, the direction is unambiguous — and consistent with what the 26-minute Extended Look already showed on screen.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
