More than 5,900 Rockstar developers are working on GTA 6 worldwide — with Rockstar India the largest studio

TL;DR

Figures drawn from employee profiles and relayed by GameGPU put more than 5,900 Rockstar developers on GTA 6: 1,615 in India, 1,441 in the United States, 1,398 in Scotland, 1,208 in England and 267 in Canada. Rockstar and Take-Two have never published an official project headcount, and the totals mix credits, active teams and wider studio employment — the final credits will remain the only definit

The largest team in Rockstar's history?

As GTA 6's November 19 release approaches, the question of how many people it takes to build a game of this scale has a new answer — on paper, at least. Fresh figures relayed by GameGPU on September 5, based on updated data compiled from employee profiles, put the number of Rockstar developers working on Grand Theft Auto VI at more than 5,900 worldwide.

The breakdown, which first circulated widely in June 2026 through a viral post from the gtacommunity account, gives Rockstar India the largest single contingent with 1,615 developers. The United States follows with 1,441, Scotland with 1,398 and England with 1,208, while Canada accounts for 267 (GameGPU). If accurate, the distribution makes Rockstar India the biggest contributor to the game by headcount — a striking shift for a studio network long associated with its Edinburgh and New York offices.

A global assembly line for Leonida

The figures illustrate how much Rockstar has changed since the Red Dead Redemption 2 era. Where older titles were built primarily by Rockstar North, the label now operates as an integrated network: Take-Two's February 2026 investor presentation describes ten internal studios, and GTA 6 is the first project to draw on all of them at once. Spreading work across India, the United States, Scotland, England and Canada lets the company run development almost around the clock, with different teams handling the open world, animation, optimization and content for the state of Leonida in parallel (GameGPU).

That structure goes a long way toward explaining the game's ambition — and the sheer number of names expected in a single Rockstar production's credits.

The caveat: no official number exists

None of this is official. Rockstar and Take-Two have never published a headcount for GTA 6, and the numbers circulating online come from employee data, not from the company. As GTA VI Explained's analysis points out, viral totals that assign neat developer counts to GTA IV, GTA V and GTA 6 usually mix full credits, active team size, outsourcing and publishing staff — a studio's headcount also includes people supporting GTA Online, internal technology and unannounced projects, not just the next Grand Theft Auto (GTA VI Explained).

The same counting problem explains why reports disagree: a widely shared October 2025 report counted more than 7,500 people across 11 studios, while the current 5,900 figure rests on a narrower method. Neither has been confirmed by Rockstar, and both are best read as orders of magnitude rather than a precise census.

What the credits will tell us

The definitive answer will come after launch, when the game's credits — expected to be the longest in Rockstar's history — provide the first complete public record of who worked on the game. Until then, the 5,900 figure is best understood as a measure of scale: whatever the exact count, GTA 6 is being built by the largest, most geographically spread team Rockstar has ever assembled, and Rockstar India's rise to the top of the list is the most telling detail in the data. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
