GTA VI fuel prices spotted: diesel at $5.22 a gallon on a Xero Gas board
A Xero Gas station sign in GTA VI footage lists four fuel grades — Regular, Plus, Ultra and Diesel — with diesel at $5.22 per gallon and petrol around $4 per gallon. The community is split between players who think the board is pure set dressing and those expecting a real fuel economy with different grades for different cars, including possible price moves tied to events like sabotaging tankers. Players picking apart Grand Theft Auto VI's Extended Look have found something new at the pumps: a full price board. A Xero Gas station sign visible in the footage lists four fuel categories — Regular, Plus, Ultra and Diesel — with diesel at $5.22 per gallon and petrol prices "fluctuating around $4", according to GameGPU, which collected the community's screenshots and posts.
Rockstar has said nothing about the board, and that silence is precisely what has turned a piece of signage into a small debate.
What the sign actually says
The board is the kind you would see outside any American filling station: four grades stacked vertically, each with its own per-gallon figure, attached to the station's canopy. Players noticed the detail while re-watching the gameplay demo, and the numbers are unusually specific — $5.22 is not a placeholder-looking price, and the gap between diesel and petrol matches the way real forecourts price the two fuels.
Xero Gas is not a new invention for the occasion: the fictional petroleum brand has been part of the series since GTA IV, and a Xero filling station was already identified in an official GTA VI screenshot set in Ambrosia County. Its return, complete with a per-gallon board, fits the advertising-satire layer Rockstar has always built into its maps — a world where even the fuel has a logo and a price.
Decoration, or a real fuel economy?
Reaction has split roughly in half. One camp reads the board as atmosphere: a piece of set dressing that sells the illusion of a functioning American city, in the same way fake shop fronts and radio ads do. The other camp is convinced the four grades mean something mechanical — different fuel types for different vehicle classes, with the cost of running a car becoming part of the way you play.
GameGPU reports that some players are already trying to connect the prices to player-driven market movement, drawing a parallel with GTA V's stock exchange: knock over the tankers of one fuel company and prices at its stations spike. That is pure speculation. Rockstar has not commented on the purpose of the price tags, on whether grades affect performance, or on whether fuel prices change at all over time.
The board also lines up with what previews have already said about the pump. Australian creator TGG, who attended an extended preview, described gas stations that refuel combustion cars, recharge EVs and carry out repairs, with a fill-up animation of about ten seconds — a mechanic Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson defended as "pretty fast for a fill-up". An earlier leak showed a pump menu charging $32 to refuel and $2,429 to repair a battered sports car (Kotaku), though that footage came from an unreleased build.
Close to reality — but a shade cheaper
The in-game prices are not far off the real thing. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the national average for regular petrol sat at $4.157 a gallon in the week ending September 7, 2026, while on-highway diesel averaged $5.967 — the same ordering as the Xero board, with the game's diesel actually a little cheaper. Florida, the real-world model for Leonida, was cheaper still at $3.860 for regular, with pump prices rising week on week.
Which is the interesting part. A price board is cheap to fake, but if the numbers track a real 2026 market, they suggest someone at Rockstar is watching the same weekly fuel reports as everybody else.
A series first, for better or worse
Fuel has never been a factor in Grand Theft Auto: stations in GTA V were scenery you drove past. GTA VI is changing that, in keeping with the simulation-heavy direction Rockstar has pushed since Red Dead Redemption 2. Whether the Xero board is the visible tip of a fuel economy or a nicely rendered prop, it tells you something about intent: Vice City has a working pump, and the sign outside says what it costs.
GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
