GTA 6 is already an official Guinness World Record holder — and Guinness is watching launch
The Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2027 officially recognises a GTA 6 trailer as the most-viewed game trailer in 24 hours, with 475 million views in one day across platforms. GWR editor Alice Bell says the team will be 'keeping a close eye' on launch records, including player counts, revenue and the number of credited developers — a title currently held by Red Dead Redemption 2.
Yes — GTA 6 is in the record book before launch
Grand Theft Auto VI has not shipped a single copy yet, and it is already an official Guinness World Record holder. The Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2027, out now, lists a GTA 6 trailer as the most-viewed game trailer in 24 hours, crediting 475 million views in a single day across platforms (TechRadar).
The record belongs to the second trailer, which Rockstar released on May 6, 2025. Within 24 hours it had gathered more than 475 million views across YouTube, social platforms and the studio's own channels — a figure Rockstar shared directly at the time and described as the biggest video launch of anything, ever (GTA BOOM; 6Charts).
What Guinness actually says
GWR Gamer's Edition 2027 editor Alice Bell puts the number in perspective. "Grand Theft Auto 6 started breaking records before it came out," she tells TechRadar. "The first trailer still has the most views in 24 hours of any video game trailer, and for a while, the second trailer had the biggest video launch of anything, of all time, according to Rockstar."
"This was later beaten by Spider-Man: Brand New Day," she adds, "but 475 million views across all platforms is about 6% of the planet's population, which is incredible when you stop and think about it."
The first trailer opened the door
The franchise's place in the 2027 book did not start with that second clip. The December 2023 debut trailer, pushed out a day early after a leak, pulled roughly 90 million views in 24 hours on YouTube alone and broke three Guinness records in the process, including the most-viewed video game reveal on the platform in a single day (6Charts). What the new edition formalises is the follow-up: a cross-platform record at a scale no game trailer had reached before, measured against everything from film teasers to music videos.
Guinness will be watching November 19
The book is closed on the trailers, but Bell makes clear the team is already looking past launch. "I'm sure there will be player count and revenue records to check as well. And of course, we'll be looking at things like the number of developers who worked on it (a record currently held by Red Dead Redemption 2)," she says, adding that GWR will be "keeping a close eye on launch and post-launch events" for further record-breaking achievements (TechRadar).
Her summary of why GTA 6 belongs in the book in the first place is blunt: "GTA 6's release is a really global phenomenon in a way that few things are these days."
Rockstar's existing haul
Guinness already credits Rockstar with plenty of hardware. GTA V is listed as both the best-selling action-adventure video game, with 225 million copies sold as of February 2026, and the most-watched game on Twitch in 2024. The GTA V launch itself — $815.7 million in 24 hours in September 2013 — remains the highest-grossing video game launch of all time, and the bar GTA VI is widely expected to clear on November 19.
That expectation now runs through every corner of the launch conversation. Prediction-market traders put an 83% implied chance on GTA VI beating the GTA V launch record, and analysts have described the pre-order campaign as the strongest ever recorded, with $180 million banked in the first week alone.
What it means
Records around a game's trailers are a strange kind of milestone — they measure anticipation rather than play. But that is precisely the point: GTA VI has entered the Guinness book on hype alone, before reviewers, players or launch-day sales have had any say. What the 2027 edition tells us is simply that the anticipation is now historical fact — and that Guinness itself expects the entry to grow after November 19.
