GTA 6 drops the tap-to-run button after 25 years — sprint moves to L3
TL;DR

GTA 6 reportedly maps sprint to L3 (left stick click) instead of the iconic tap-to-run on X/A, ending a Rockstar convention dating back to GTA III. The change comes from hands-on preview reports, not an official announcement.

Running fast in a Rockstar game is about to feel very different

For 25 years, sprinting in Grand Theft Auto meant hammering a face button. From GTA III in 2001 through GTA V, and in Red Dead Redemption 2 too, running at full speed required frantically tapping X on PlayStation or A on Xbox. According to a wave of preview reports published on September 1-2, GTA 6 is putting an end to that: the default control scheme reportedly maps sprint to L3 — clicking the left stick — instead of a face button.

The information comes from hands-on previews rather than an official Rockstar announcement. YouTuber MikeShowSha, one of the creators invited to a recent preview event, said the default scheme now uses L3 on PlayStation, and its equivalent on Xbox, to sprint — as relayed by Forbes' Paul Tassi. Eurogamer framed it as the run button changing "after 25 years", while Vice, Dexerto and Game Rant echoed the same reports. Rockstar has not published an official control list, so the layout should be treated as preview-based — but several independent accounts agree on the change.

The end of the button mash

The tap-to-sprint convention dates back to GTA III (2001). In the 3D-era games and their successors, nudging the stick made your character walk or jog, but sprinting meant mashing the X/A button — a gesture that wore out thumbs, and sometimes controllers, across the series. The mechanic survived in GTA V and persisted in Red Dead Redemption 2, becoming one of Rockstar's most recognizable control quirks. GTA Online added optional settings in 2023 to reduce the amount of mashing required, but the default behavior never changed — until now, according to the preview reports.

Based on those accounts, sprint in GTA 6 is simply activated by clicking L3/LS (the left stick), the same input used by most modern shooters and open-world games. No rhythmic tapping, no speed-dependent mashing: push the stick, click, and go. Vice adds that previewers described character movement as more fluid than in Red Dead Redemption 2 — a natural fit for a scheme that no longer ties top speed to button rhythm. Dexerto's coverage leans on the practical upside: for players who found X/A mashing uncomfortable, the new default could be a genuine quality-of-life win.

What it tells us about Rockstar's direction

On paper it is a small change; symbolically, it is a big one. Rockstar has historically been reluctant to alter its core feel, and the sprint input has been part of the GTA identity since the PlayStation 2 era. Moving it to L3 suggests GTA 6's controls are being modernized for comfort and accessibility — in line with other confirmed evolutions, from the reworked wanted system to the redesigned vehicles and driving feel.

Until Rockstar publishes the official control scheme, treat the exact layout as reported, not confirmed. If it holds, November 19 will mark the first time in the series' 3D history that sprinting does not require a face-button workout. GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
