Sam Houser pulls out of GTA 6's GQ interview, four years in the making
Rockstar Games co-founder and president Sam Houser has pulled out of a planned GQ interview ahead of GTA VI, the magazine's writer Sam White said on October 3, 2026, citing personal reasons after four years of talks that Rockstar had confirmed in April 2026 (RockstarINTEL, @videotech). GTA VI itself is unaffected and stays dated for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The withdrawal leav
The short answer: the interview is off, the launch is not
Rockstar Games co-founder and president Sam Houser has pulled out of a planned GQ interview ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI, the magazine's writer Sam White said. RockstarINTEL and the Rockstar community account @videotech relayed the news on October 3, 2026, with White stating the decision was taken "mostly for personal reasons" in the past few weeks. Nothing about the game changes: GTA VI is still scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What was agreed, and when it fell apart
According to RockstarINTEL, White spent four years in conversations with Rockstar to secure an interview with the company's president, and Rockstar confirmed to him in April 2026 that Houser would do it. That changed within the last few weeks. RockstarINTEL's report carries no statement from Rockstar, and the studio has not added anything of its own to the story.
White then went public with his own account, and the wording is blunt: "After a tough year personally, and so much time invested in the story, it's gutting to be empty handed on a historic game and a fascinating developer who I hold in high regard," he wrote. He added that Houser "would've made for a perfect GQ profile; probably the biggest of my career!" He signed off with "Onto the next", which reads as an ending rather than a postponement.
Why GQ had a claim on this interview
Sam White is not a newcomer to Rockstar. He wrote GQ's October 24, 2018 cover story on Red Dead Redemption 2, built around one of the rare sit-downs Dan Houser gave that year and one of the few occasions a journalist was taken inside Rockstar North in Edinburgh. The magazine had already delivered a Rockstar profile the company was happy with, so asking for the brother who never speaks was the logical follow-up.
Dan Houser's exit made Sam the last Houser standing
Dan Houser, Rockstar's vice president of creativity and the studio's chief writer for two decades, left the company in February 2020, a departure first reported by Video Games Chronicle. Sam Houser has run the studio alone since then. That is precisely what made a GQ profile of him, rather than of a writer or a studio head, worth four years of a journalist's patience.
The full list: Sam Houser's on-the-record interviews
Houser has given barely a handful of interviews in more than two decades, and almost all of them cluster around release dates:
- April 2008 β 1UP.com published an interview with Houser the week GTA IV shipped; TechCrunch flagged it on April 23, 2008.
- July 2008 β MCV/Develop ran a two-part profile, "Sam Houser: His-Story", in which he traced his career from BMG's games division to the founding of Rockstar.
- 2011 β journalist Harold Goldberg, who interviewed Houser for his book on the industry, told Kotaku that the access had taken repeated sessions and follow-up questions to secure.
- September 2013 β The Sunday Times interviewed Houser days before GTA V's September 17 release; GamesIndustry.biz published the quotes on September 9, 2013.
- 2013 β Playboy published a Goldberg profile in which he wrote that Houser "hasn't given a long interview to anyone but me" over the previous five years.
That is five documented sit-downs across roughly 25 years, none of them in the PlayStation 4 era or later. Houser explained the logic himself in the Playboy piece: "You take me out of context, and I can be ridiculous. I don't want that. The work is the work."
What Rockstar did for GTA V and Red Dead 2
The contrast with the current campaign is the substance of the story. For GTA V, Rockstar approved a rare Houser interview late in the cycle β the Sunday Times piece ran eight days before the game's September 17, 2013 launch. For Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, the studio leaned on Dan Houser, who spoke to GQ on October 24, 2018 and to Variety the same day. Each of those cycles produced at least one founder-level interview. The GTA VI cycle, with 47 days left before launch, has produced none.
What the studio is doing instead
Rockstar's GTA VI pre-launch press has been team-led rather than founder-led. Game Informer's issue 382, published September 29, 2026, and LOVE magazine's issue 27, out October 5, 2026, both interview staff rather than founders β narrative chief Rupert Humphries, co-studio head Rob Nelson and several of the game's writers. @videotech notes that Nelson and art co-president Aaron Garbut "will likely continue serving as the main public facing representatives for GTA VI."
What is still uncertain
Whether GQ or another outlet can reopen the door before November 19 is unknown, and no replacement interview has been announced. Rockstar has not commented on the withdrawal. For now the studio's founder remains, as he has for most of the franchise's life, off the record β and the launch will be explained by his team rather than by him.
