GTA 6 car customisation is reviving the Midnight Club spirit — 18 years after the last race

Rockstar has not released a Midnight Club game since Midnight Club: Los Angeles in 2008. The street-racing series debuted in 2000 and ran for three mainline sequels before going quiet — nearly 18 years of fans asking where it went (GAMINGbible). With GTA 6 now leaning hard into car culture, that question may finally have an answer: not a new Midnight Club, but a game that carries the same spirit.
After watching "An Extended Look", the 27-minute gameplay premiere that aired on Netflix on August 27 before hitting YouTube, GAMINGbible argues that GTA 6 "could be the closest we'll ever get to a new Midnight Club" — a bold claim, but one the footage actually supports (Eurogamer).
Street racing at the heart of Vice City
The Extended Look shows street racers tearing through the neon-lit streets of Vice City in heavily customised cars, with elaborate paint jobs and nitrous systems straight out of the Midnight Club playbook. GAMINGbible notes the sequences carry "major Need for Speed vibes" — fitting, given how much influence arcade street-racing games had on Midnight Club itself. Between tuning, illegal street races and a city built for speed, Rockstar appears to be investing heavily in exactly the three pillars that defined its forgotten series.
The driving itself has also changed direction. TGGonYT, a content creator who attended a preview event at Rockstar's Edinburgh studio, told attendees the handling felt much less "arcadey" and more "grounded", with cars carrying considerably more weight (GAMINGbible). That is a departure from Midnight Club's floaty arcade handling — but it raises a tantalising question for the hypothetical revival: could a modern Midnight Club sit somewhere between arcade and simulation, in the same space as Forza Horizon?
Garages you can brag about
Car culture is also written into the game's most expensive preorder tier. The GTA VI Ultimate Edition bundles three exclusive garages — Rideout Customs Mod Shop, One-Eyed Willie's Mod Shop and Paradise Garage, the last one aimed at off-road vehicles (GAMINGbible, Rockstar Newswire). Standard edition buyers still get garages of their own, so customisation is not locked behind the premium tier; it is simply richer there. The existence of dedicated mod shops is a strong signal that the game treats vehicle personalisation as a first-class system rather than an afterthought.
Why it matters
None of this confirms Midnight Club is coming back, and GAMINGbible is careful to call its comparison an impression rather than a fact. What it does show is Rockstar channelling the DNA of its dormant racing series into GTA 6 — street racing, tuning culture and garage life all in one open world. For players who grew up on Midnight Club: Los Angeles, GTA 6 arriving on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S may be the closest thing to a reunion the series will ever get.
