GTA 6 boxed copies sell out at US retailers: Amazon stops pre-orders, Target empties in LA and New York
The boxed GTA 6 edition is running out at some of the biggest US retailers 39 days before the November 19 launch: per RockstarINTEL, both Amazon US code-in-box listings (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S) showed 'Currently unavailable' as of Sunday, October 11, 2026, and many Target stores in Los Angeles and New York showed 'Preorders sold out'. The scarcity is not new β Rockstar's own store page has stated
The short answer
GTA VI's boxed edition is running dry at some of the largest retailers in the United States, 39 days before the November 19 launch. Per RockstarINTEL, neither the PS5 nor the Xbox Series X|S code-in-box copy could be pre-ordered on Amazon US as of Sunday, October 11, 2026: both listings returned "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."
The same outlet reports that pre-orders have sold out at many Target stores in densely populated US areas, with Los Angeles and New York City locations showing "Preorders sold out". Rockstar has not said a word about any of this, and the word "sold out" comes from retailer listings, not from the publisher.
What the Amazon and Target listings actually show
This is a retailer inventory story, not an announcement. RockstarINTEL says it verified the Amazon US change directly, and that the two affected products are the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of the code-in-box edition β the version that ships as a printed download code rather than a disc. Target is less uniform: some stores still accept orders with a "Ready on Nov 12" date, while others, in the outlet's words, have "next to none available", notably in Los Angeles and New York.
Two independent retail systems now point to November 12
The November 12 date is not new, and that is what makes it worth watching. When RockstarINTEL photographed official GTA VI posters on a British retail park on September 23, 2026, the same reporting already placed in-store collection of boxed copies on November 12 β seven days before launch. Target's "Ready on Nov 12" line matches to the day, on another continent.
A box with no disc, sold under the digital price
Boxed GTA VI contains no disc; it contains a code. The reason buyers still want it is arithmetic, not nostalgia. Per RockstarINTEL, Amazon UK was listing the game at Β£65 on October 12, against a Β£69.99 UK recommended price β 7.1% below the shelf price. Back on September 23, the same outlet documented A4 in-store slips advertising Β£67.99, or 2.9% below that same Β£69.99. In 19 days, the deepest documented UK undercut has widened by Β£2.99.
That price gap exists because the recommended price is the digital price. There is no disc to press, so a retailer can discount the box without losing money on manufacturing, and RockstarINTEL notes the boxed copy is "typically cheaper to buy this version of the game" than the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store listing.
Confirmed, plausible, and still unproven
Three statements sit at three different levels of certainty, and they should not be mixed. Confirmed by Rockstar since June 2026: the code-in-box edition exists in limited quantities, and the publisher's own store page carries the words "while supplies last".
Plausible on the evidence: a limited print run can genuinely exhaust before launch, because unlike a digital copy a physical box cannot be duplicated on demand. Unproven: that the Amazon and Target gaps will last, spread to other chains, or are anything other than listing errors β a possibility RockstarINTEL explicitly leaves open, and which exists in every pre-order season.
Why this matters for a mostly digital campaign
Almost all of the campaign's volume is digital. RFI reported on August 29, 2026 that GTA VI had passed 4 million pre-orders, and analytics firms quoted at the time described it as the strongest pre-order campaign on record. Those orders are overwhelmingly storefront purchases, which makes the boxed allocation a small, finite slice of a very large number β exactly the configuration in which a cheap SKU disappears first.
The 140-day cash-flow argument
RockstarINTEL's most practical point concerns when money leaves the buyer's account. Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, and PlayStation Network charges immediately. Most retailers, Amazon included, only charge when the product ships β and for a code in a box collected on November 12, that is 140 days after the order, 147 days before the November 19 launch. Anyone who pre-ordered digitally in June has already paid for a game they cannot play until November 19.
