When Rockstar finally showed GTA 6 gameplay on Netflix on August 27, fans scanning the footage frame by frame found more than new mechanics and a fresh radio soundtrack. Kotaku spotted a mission that first appeared four years ago — in the massive 2022 leak (Kotaku).
Back in 2022, before GTA 6 had even been officially announced, a hacker leaked many minutes of early development footage of the game. With no trailers and no screenshots to study, that raw footage became the only window fans had into Rockstar's next open world — right up until the official first trailer arrived in late 2023 (Kotaku). The clips looked rough, unsurprisingly: at the time, the game was still roughly four years away from release.
The same diner, four years later
The mission in question is the diner robbery. The Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia storming the same restaurant glimpsed in the 2022 footage: Hank's Waffles, with the same layout, the same name on the facade and the same "Open 7 Days" sign on the window (Kotaku). What has changed is everything around it. The lighting is vastly improved, the NPCs no longer look like crash test dummies, and Jason and Lucia themselves look far more finalized. Same bones, completely different flesh — a textbook example of what four years of polish do to a AAA production (Kotaku).
Why this comparison matters
Direct comparisons between a leaked early build and the finished product are rare for a Rockstar game, because the studio almost never shows its development process. The 2022 leak made this particular mission infamous; the fact that Rockstar chose to include it in the biggest marketing moment of the year reads like a deliberate nod to the fans who lived through the leak era (Kotaku). It is also a useful reality check: the rough, unfinished-looking footage that dominated the conversation in 2022 was never a reliable preview of the final game — and the Extended Look confirms it.
The reveal itself was a record-breaker: the Netflix premiere drew millions of concurrent viewers across the platform and Twitch, according to Eurogamer, and the full video has since been uploaded to YouTube. Between the official footage and the leaks that preceded it — including last week's Cyberleek campaign — fans now have an unusually complete picture of a game that is still months away from launch (Kotaku).
GTA 6 arrives November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If Hank's Waffles is any indication, the wait might just be worth it.
