The short answer: the ceremony comes first
GTA VI will not be up for anything at the 2026 Golden Joystick Awards. Not because of anything Rockstar did, but because of the calendar: the 44th Golden Joystick Awards take place on November 11, 2026 at London's Troxy, and the game launches on November 19 — eight days after the trophies are handed out. Titles compete for the core categories based on an eligibility window that closes before the public vote ends, so Rockstar's game will instead be in the running at the following edition, in 2027.
The dates that settle it
The calendar leaves little room for argument. The shortlist is revealed on September 25, which is also when public voting opens across the main categories; that vote closes on October 23; and the Ultimate Game of the Year ballot runs from October 26 to 30. By the time that last window shuts, virtually nobody outside Rockstar and the press will have played the game — the awards' year is effectively decided weeks before GTA VI exists in the wild.
That is a timing issue, as Dork puts it, not a sign of trouble for the project. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick has recently reaffirmed the November 19 date, saying the publisher feels "really good about it", while Rockstar has still not announced a PC version or a PC release window.
The 'big five' sweep is now out of reach
The consequence is bigger than one missing nomination. The games industry's five major Game of the Year awards normally run in sequence across a single season: the Golden Joysticks in November, The Game Awards in December, February's DICE Awards, the GDC Awards in March and the BAFTAs in April. A sweep of all five has only ever been completed twice — by Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 in the 2023/24 season and by Sandfall Interactive's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in 2025/26.
Because the first step of that sequence is closed to GTA VI, the sweep is off the table this season, no matter what happens at the other four shows. The game can still win everything else, including The Game Awards' top prize in December; it simply cannot do it in one continuous run, which is what the record requires.
Rockstar's Joystick record, before the game even ships
The awkward part for the awards is how well GTA VI has already done in them without being playable. The game took Most Wanted Game at the 2024 and 2025 ceremonies, and in 2025 it also won Best Game Trailer for Trailer 2 — the 28th and 29th Golden Joystick wins in Rockstar Games' history. No one from the studio attended last November's show to collect them.
One category may still keep the game on the 2026 ballot: the Joysticks have historically reserved a "Most Wanted" award for titles launching after the ceremony itself. The shortlist due on September 25 will show whether GTA VI is named there for a third year running — eight days before launch, a slightly absurd footnote to an awards year it otherwise cannot enter.
The next question: The Game Awards, December 10
The timing problem is not identical everywhere. The Game Awards 2026 ceremony is set for December 10, and nominations are usually locked in around mid-November — reported at around November 20 this year, the day after GTA VI arrives. Outlets covering the awards note that the deadline makes the game's place on the nominee list uncertain, and that the final selection has not been settled.
So the short version: GTA VI will dominate the conversation around every awards show for the next twelve months, but the one record that depends on winning the first prize of the season is already gone.
