GTA 6 map size officially confirmed: Leonida is twice as big as GTA 5 — and Vice City dwarfs Los Santos

Rockstar finally puts numbers on the map

"How big is GTA 6's map?" has been one of the most persistent questions in gaming for the past two years. Leaks offered glimpses of a coastline that looked enormous, and Rockstar kept describing Leonida as its largest world ever — without ever giving a figure. That changed after the hands-off previews that accompanied the Netflix premiere of "An Extended Look." Content creator TGG shared a video on the subject, and according to the details he relayed, Rockstar's co-head of development Rob Nelson established the first official numbers: the map of Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5's map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's (Screen Rant).

Vice City vs Los Santos

The comparisons get even more striking at city level. Vice City itself is double the size of Los Santos, GTA 5's central city — the urban core alone already matches one of the biggest cities Rockstar has ever built (Screen Rant). The suburbs and built-up areas around Vice City push the ratio much further: according to the same presentation, they are roughly 11 times larger than Los Santos and its surroundings, a number echoed across the coverage that followed the previews (Beebom, games.gg). Chinese outlets picked up the same confirmation for their audience, translating the figures for a market where the game's scale has been a major talking point since the first trailer (凤凰网科技, 新浪财经).

What the numbers actually mean

To put it in perspective: GTA V's map covers Los Santos, Blaine County and the surrounding wilderness, and it already felt enormous in 2013. Red Dead Redemption 2's map is even more sprawling thanks to its rural density. A Leonida that doubles GTA V's map while making Vice City twice the size of Los Santos is a step change, not an incremental one — and it is consistent with everything Rockstar has been showing: the 26-minute Extended Look revealed dense traffic, packed streets, wildlife across the state, and over 600,000 unique NPC animations, more than ten times GTA V's count. The studio is clearly betting that the extra space will be filled with activity, not emptiness. The risk, as with any open world of this scale, is that size becomes a burden rather than a promise — but the gameplay shown so far suggests Rockstar is aware of the challenge (Screen Rant).

A figure that fits the wider marketing push

The map confirmation arrived alongside the other headline numbers of the week: a playthrough of around 80 hours (main story plus optional objectives with narrative consequences) and a console target of 30 FPS. Chinese coverage of the same previews also cites an estimate of roughly 60 hours for the critical path alone — a figure that has not been officially confirmed, but is consistent with Nelson's 80-hour run if side content is set aside (新浪财经). As always with pre-release numbers, these are Rockstar's own descriptions from preview events rather than a full official specification sheet.

What to watch next

The map figures come from the preview circuit, not from a dedicated Rockstar announcement. An official spec sheet, an updated website, or the next trailer could refine or expand them — and the question of how much of Leonida is explorable, versus decorative backdrop, will only be answered on November 19. For now, GTA 6's world has its first real numbers, and they are every bit as big as the leaks suggested.
