GTA VI: the Miami Heat becomes the Vice City Narcos — and basketball is playable

A basketball layer hidden in plain sight

Since "An Extended Look" aired on Netflix on August 27, fans have been combing through the 26-minute gameplay deep dive frame by frame. Among the most striking finds: GTA VI's Vice City is packed with NBA references. According to TrashTalk, which ran a detailed breakdown of the footage, the game's fictional Miami is built around real local sports culture — starting with the city's most famous franchise, the Miami Heat (TrashTalk).

The basketball team does not appear under its real name. In Rockstar's version of Florida, the Heat becomes the Vice City Narcos — a nod that fits the game's satirical tradition of renaming real brands. The Kaseya Center, the Heat's actual arena, has been recreated as the Sahara Arena, and characters spotted in the footage wear caps embroidered with "VC Narcos Champions," an apparent wink at the Heat's three NBA titles in 2006, 2012 and 2013 (MCETV). The cult "Vice" jersey, a beloved piece of Heat history, is also reportedly modeled with care (TrashTalk).

Basketball is a playable activity

The references go beyond decoration. The footage shows Jason, one of the two protagonists, picking up a ball and hitting a fadeaway on the hoop in front of his house — which suggests basketball will be a playable mini-game in GTA VI (TrashTalk). As with most details seen in the Extended Look, Rockstar has not confirmed the extent of the feature: it is unclear whether players will be able to play full games or simply shoot around. The same presentation shows other activities alongside it — weight training, wrestling, kayaking, hunting and fishing — with the full list still unknown (Urban Hit).

The whole local sports ecosystem gets the Vice City treatment

The NBA is not the only league reimagined in Leonida. The Miami Dolphins become the Vice City Manatees, and several characters in the trailer wear their jerseys — including the cover girl and Dre'Quan Priest, according to a breakdown relayed by TrashTalk, while a member of the PTT Youngin$ gang wears a Vice City Narcos jersey (TrashTalk). Whether protagonists will be able to wear these team outfits themselves has not been revealed so far (MCETV).

What it says about Rockstar's approach

None of these findings are officially confirmed by Rockstar — they are observations drawn from the Extended Look and its previews, and the studio has not commented on the sports references. Still, the density of the detail fits the pattern established since the reveal: Rockstar building Vice City as a living, satirical version of Miami, down to its sports culture. It also raises an obvious question for the weeks ahead: with the November 19 launch approaching, more sports easter eggs may still be waiting to be found (Urban Hit). GTA VI arrives November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
