GTA 6 could sell 48 million copies at launch: Piper Sandler raises its forecast as Reddit traffic quadruples
TL;DR

Piper Sandler now projects around 48 million GTA 6 sales at launch, up from 'more than 45 million' in June, after activity on the game's subreddit roughly quadrupled since mid-August. Ampere Analysis separately estimates that the 27 August Netflix Extended Look drove more than 100,000 US sign-ups, and preorder trackers already put GTA 6 near 4.5 million units and about $450 million in revenue — 77

The short answer

Piper Sandler now expects Grand Theft Auto VI to sell around 48 million copies at launch. The US investment bank raised its projection from "more than 45 million units" in a note reported on September 11, 2026, and the trigger is not a trailer or a preorder milestone: it is the traffic on the game's own subreddit, which has roughly quadrupled since mid-August (Wccftech).

If the figure holds, GTA VI would not merely break the industry's opening records — it would shatter them by a wide margin, months before the game's November 19 release.

Where the 48 million comes from

Piper Sandler's model is deliberately unusual. Instead of leaning only on preorder trackers, the bank built its estimate around the relationship between subreddit activity and launch sales for roughly fifteen major game releases, then applied that pattern to the numbers posted in GTA 6's community (Wccftech).

In June, that framework produced a projection of more than 45 million units. The September revision pushes it to approximately 48 million after community activity jumped over a few weeks (Wccftech). The bank itself has never presented the method as a certainty, and analysts at the time of the June note pointed out that Reddit traffic measures enthusiasm rather than purchasing power — a subreddit can grow faster than a player base, and a launch is ultimately decided by hardware availability and retail stock, not thread counts (Wccftech).

The demand data keeps pointing the same way

The revision is not an isolated signal. Three independent data points now describe the same curve.

  • Netflix. Ampere Analysis estimates that the six-hour exclusive window for Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27 generated more than 100,000 US sign-ups on launch day, making it Netflix's third-highest subscriber-acquisition peak of 2026 — ahead of almost every live sports event the platform has carried this year (Ampere Analysis).
  • Preorders. Sensor Tower's weekly trackers put GTA 6 at roughly 4.4 to 4.55 million preorders and about $446 million in gross revenue by late August, with 77% of units on PS5 and close to 90% of buyers choosing the $99.99 Ultimate Edition rather than the standard release (TweakTown).
  • Community scale. Subreddit traffic quadrupling in three weeks is the kind of acceleration that usually shows up in a game's launch week, not eleven weeks before it (Wccftech).

What 48 million would mean for GTA

For scale, Take-Two's own numbers put GTA V at 11.2 million copies and $815.7 million in its first 24 hours in September 2013, crossing $1 billion in three days. GTA IV, in 2008, moved roughly 3.6 million units on day one.

A 48-million launch would therefore sit at roughly four times GTA V's opening day, in a market where consoles have not grown anything like as fast as the audience for this specific game. It would also validate Rockstar's distribution strategy outright: the Netflix-first reveal, the paid Miami advertising push and the deliberate scarcity around collector editions all exist to concentrate attention into a single window rather than stretch it thin.

The caveat

None of this is confirmed. Piper Sandler, Ampere and Sensor Tower are all third parties working with models, and Take-Two has given no launch guidance of its own beyond the release date. Reddit-traffic projections in particular have never been tested on a game this size — there is no precedent to check the method against, because no game has ever been this large.

GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
