GTA 6 rumored to drop property buying in story mode โ€” because Jason and Lucia are on the run

A franchise staple under threat

Buying property has been part of GTA's DNA since Vice City and San Andreas โ€” so the idea of Rockstar quietly removing it from GTA 6's story mode is exactly the kind of rumor that splits the community. Over the weekend, Chinese outlet 3DM ran the story under a provocative headline: "the ancestral rules have changed" (3DM).

The claim, relayed by 17173 and ali213 on August 31, comes from a content creator who reportedly attended a closed-door demo of the game (17173, ali213). It reached Western players through a viral post by the fan account GTA6posts on X, which gathered more than a million views within days (X). Rockstar has not commented โ€” and all three outlets stress that the information remains unconfirmed.

A story-first explanation

Why would Rockstar break with such a beloved tradition? The alleged reason is narrative: Jason and Lucia are on the run. The two protagonists spend the campaign hiding and moving constantly โ€” and buying a permanent home would leave exactly the kind of traces two fugitives cannot afford (17173, ali213).

That doesn't mean no place to rest. According to the reports, GTA 6 keeps dedicated hideouts with the essentials: saving, changing outfits and storing vehicles. Two residences have been shown so far โ€” the motel at Port Gellhorn from the first trailer, and a green seaside house linked to drug dealer Bryan Heard. In "An Extended Look", Jason and Lucia even repair a roof, which outlets interpret as a possible house-maintenance mechanic designed to compensate for the absence of purchases (3DM, ali213).

A bigger shift than it sounds

If the rumor proves accurate, it would be one of the most significant systemic changes in the series' history. In Vice City and San Andreas, buying businesses and safehouses was a core gameplay loop; later entries restricted story-mode purchases, but GTA Online turned property into a pillar of its economy โ€” apartments, garages, offices, hangars, nightclubs. Removing it from the campaign would be a clear break with that heritage.

Other unverified claims are circulating alongside this one: roughly 40% of buildings could be enterable, and locations such as fences and spray-paint repair garages would unlock progressively through the story (17173, ali213).

What to make of it

Caution is in order: the source is anonymous, relayed by fan accounts, and Rockstar has said nothing official. But the rumor fits the Bonnie-and-Clyde premise shown in every official trailer, and it would not be the first time the studio rethinks a sacred cow for the sake of the story. Until a confirmation โ€” or a denial โ€” arrives, the dream of buying that Vice City mansion stays exactly that: a dream (3DM). GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
