GTA 6's suppressive fire: Rockstar confirms a non-lethal way to escape the police
A series first, straight from Rockstar North
GTA 6 will introduce a mechanic the series has never had: suppressive fire. In a new interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, confirmed that players will be able to fire warning shots — deliberately missing, aiming near the police instead of at them — to startle officers and buy time to escape (Kotaku). The goal, he says, is simple: give players the choice not to kill police or civilians while getting away.
"We wanted to give players the choice not to kill police or civilians while trying to get away," Nelson told Famitsu. "You can force them to remain in place while you escape, but it also sits in line with the story of how Jason and Lucia are trying to get away from the law. It would be unnatural to have the pair stay there and get involved in a long gunfight when they aren't cornered."
Why the police are scarier this time
The non-lethal route is not just a nicety — it is also a survival strategy. Shooting your way out is still possible, but it now has consequences: it impacts your criminal profile, the system that tracks how the world perceives you, from "psycho killer" to "refined thief". And this time around, the police are not pushovers. "The police are tough opponents this time round!" Nelson warns, according to Kotaku.
Suppressive fire is particularly useful in tight situations such as store robberies. As the developers explain, robbing a shop is now a viable way to make money — but if an NPC spots you entering with a visible gun, they may call the police before you have even committed the act, leaving officers waiting outside when you try to leave (ITHome).
The art of the clean getaway
Nelson walked through a concrete example of a bloodless escape at a two-star wanted level (ITHome, Kotaku):
- If a witness called the police while you were wearing a mask, take it off before the cops arrive — they will recognize you less easily.
- Put the gun away and watch the officers' movements.
- Steal an old car — the police know what you are wearing, but they do not know you just stole a new vehicle.
- Drive carefully, and never step out without changing clothes: if you get out still wearing the same outfit, officers can still identify you.
The Extended Look itself already hinted at this philosophy: in one scene, Jason shoots out the tires of a police truck to escape a chase — a moment Nelson highlights as a non-lethal choice, since none of the officers involved died. "There are quite a few moments where you can make progress without killing anyone," he adds (Kotaku).
What this means
Suppressive fire joins a growing list of confirmed systems — the six-star wanted system, the criminal profile, handcrafted interiors — that push GTA 6 toward more player agency in how far the violence goes. Whether you play as a cold-blooded killer or a careful thief who never pulls the trigger, Rockstar says the choice is yours. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
