GTA 6's only VR moment is a joke — a 2019 Quest cameo in the Extended Look

GTA 6's only VR moment is a joke — a 2019 Quest cameo in the Extended Look

One VR scene in 26 minutes

The Extended Look that Rockstar aired on August 27 — 26 minutes of in-game footage captured on PS5 — was packed with systems, wildlife and detail. But for VR enthusiasts, the most notable "VR gameplay" in the whole showcase happens at the 17:27 mark, and it is not what anyone hoped for. As Road to VR points out, a character briefly appears wearing a VR headset, "partaking in a whole different kind of… simulation" (Road to VR). It is a gag, not a feature.

The details make the joke deliberate. The headset is unmistakably modeled on the original Oculus Quest, Meta's first standalone 6DOF headset released in 2019 — fabric front, visible tracking cameras, and a silhouette that VR.org reads as "slightly embarrassing" to a general audience. Rockstar did not model a Quest 3 or a Vision Pro; it reached back to the oldest, most dated headset it could. That art direction is a punchline aimed squarely at people who wear headsets indoors.

A joke that lands because the hope is real

GTA 6 is the kind of game the VR community has fantasized about for years: a dense, living city simulation with an unprecedented level of fidelity, "practically begging to be experienced in the most immersive way possible" (Road to VR). Yet there is no sign of official VR support. The game ships on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and Rockstar's own product page lists no PC version and no date for one (VR.org). For a franchise whose PC port historically arrived months or years late, that matters: GTA 5 reached consoles in September 2013 and PC in April 2015, a gap of about nineteen months (VR.org).

Rockstar's VR track record

The studio has actually shipped a VR game before — once, nine years ago. L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files launched on December 15, 2017, a VR-only build that reworked the interrogation system for room scale. The verdict from players was split: 562 positive reviews against 604 negative on Steam, roughly 48% positive out of 1,166 reviews (VR.org). Since then, nothing — no follow-up, no port, and Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped without VR. GTA 6 continues that pattern.

The mod route is blocked, for now

GTA 5's VR second life came through unofficial PC mods, most famously those by Luke Ross, years after launch (Road to VR, VR.org). That route requires a PC build, and GTA 6 does not have one announced. Applying GTA 5's console-to-PC timing, the earliest plausible PC window would be around 2028 — and modders would still need months after that. There is also a legal wrinkle: CD Projekt Red issued a DMCA takedown against Luke Ross's paid Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod earlier this year, shortly before announcing its own location-based VR experience with Zero Latency (VR.org). Publishers who intend to monetize a VR treatment of their own IP have shown they will act against paid mods.

Bottom line

The 17:27 cameo was picked up by the VR press all week — The Ghost Howls featured it in its XR Week Peek (2026.08.31) — because it crystallizes the situation in a single shot: GTA 6 will be a flat-screen experience on November 19, and Rockstar's stance on VR has not changed since 2017. The joke is a wink at the community's hopes. It is also, for anyone holding out for a headset version of Vice City, the clearest answer yet: don't hold your breath.
