GTA 6 brings back San Andreas' weight and muscle systems — and 'multi-day benders' will show

San Andreas' body system is back

Twenty-two years after CJ pumped iron in the gyms of Los Santos, Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will revive the San Andreas-style weight and muscle systems (Kotaku). The confirmation comes from the studio's first major press preview, published by Dazed, in which Rockstar's development heads walked journalists through the game's lifestyle simulation: eat too much and your character visibly gains weight, skip sleep and he looks wrecked, hit the gym and he gets stronger (Eurogamer, gtaintel).

A system that shows on your face

The most talked-about detail is the "multi-day bender". According to Eurogamer, letting Jason and Lucia party for days on end reportedly leaves noticeable effects on their appearance and condition — a consequence layer that turns every night out into a small lifestyle choice (Eurogamer). IGN summarizes the mechanic as San Andreas-like stats that track weight and strength based on how you eat and work out, alongside numerous other factors (IGN). The Dazed preview also ties the system into the broader realism push: deeper NPC reactions, seamless character switching, and a world that remembers what you do (Sportskeeda, consolepulse).

From 2004 to 2026

For veterans, the callback is obvious. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) let CJ build muscle, gain fat and raise stamina through food, gym sessions and exercise — and NPCs reacted to his physique. GTA V dropped most of that depth. Bringing it back in GTA 6 is part of what Polygon describes as Rockstar doubling down on the grounded mechanics of Red Dead Redemption 2, aiming for its most realistic open world yet (Polygon). The Extended Look had already teased the idea: gym sequences and body-building animations were spotted by viewers, and the Chinese press relayed the first appearance of the gym, with players speculating about a full attribute-growth system (新浪财经).

What it means for players

This is a quiet but significant signal of GTA 6's RPG ambitions. A visible body system changes how players approach everything: food stops being a simple healing item, sleep matters, and the way you live between missions becomes part of the fantasy. It also raises the roleplay ceiling — two players can end up with very different-looking protagonists depending on how they treat their virtual bodies (Eurogamer, IGN). Whether the system goes as deep as San Andreas' full stat sheet, or stays closer to a cosmetic layer, remains to be seen — but Rockstar confirming it at all tells you the studio is serious about life simulation this time. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
