Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered devs say GTA 6 was 'never part of our thinking'

One game that isn't running from November 19

There is a well-known rule of thumb in the games industry: never launch anywhere near a Rockstar blockbuster. GTA 6 arrives on November 19, and a wave of publishers have bent their calendars around it — Squadron 42 has fled to 2027, Fable to February, and September has become a crowded battlefield of games all trying to stay out of the blast radius. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is the exception that proves the rule. The arena fighter from Pipeworks and Atari lands on November 3, sixteen days before Rockstar's game, and the team says the timing was never about GTA 6 at all (IGN).

In a sweeping interview about the remaster of the 2002 GameCube and Xbox classic, IGN asked longtime Pipeworks developer and senior designer Simon Strange how the release date was chosen — and whether GTA 6 played a factor. His answer was blunt: "Honestly, wasn't even in our heads at all when we were picking the release date. That's not my business. I make the video games." Strange, a veteran of the original versions, added that the whole GTA comparison became a running joke the team enjoyed: "It's a really cute meme. We've all really enjoyed that. It was never part of our thinking. I wasn't looking at that calendar and being worried in any way" (IGN).

Godzilla Day, not a GTA strategy

November 3 is not an arbitrary slot. It is Godzilla Day — the date the original film premiered in Japanese theaters in 1954, and the day Toho recognizes as the franchise's birthday. Strange explained that keeping Gojira's November birthday was simply a matter of respect: once Pipeworks signed its contract with Atari and locked a timeline for physical disc manufacturing, the date was set. No hedging, no analytics, no Rockstar radar.

A two-week bet

Atari, for its part, admits it was "certainly aware of the proximity" when running the numbers — but the publisher felt the gap between the two November releases left Godzilla, and its own cozy life-sim Barbie Rewind (November 12), more than enough breathing room. Atari also says it has been delighted by fan reactions to the idea of its two games releasing in the same month as GTA: "The amount and quality of creative content fans are posting online is astounding and a joy to watch" (IGN).

Whether the strategy pays off is another question. GTA 6 is expected to dominate coverage, creator time and storefront attention for weeks. But Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered isn't chasing the mainstream — it's a faithful revival of a beloved 2002 arena fighter for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. If the memes are any indication, the King of the Monsters may be one of the few games this fall that people remember precisely because it stood its ground.
