GTA 6 early: leaked NVIDIA DLSS 5 is being injected into GTA 5 β and players call it a preview
A "GTA 6 early" mod is flooding the community
With GTA VI less than three months from release, players have found an unusual way to scratch the itch: they are injecting NVIDIA's unreleased DLSS 5 into GTA 5 β and joking that they are "playing GTA 6 early" (17173).
The story started when an early access build of NBA 2K27 shipped with a 158 MB copy of NVIDIA's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering library. The RenoDX modding community extracted it and managed to hook the experimental runtime into existing games that were never designed for it (VideoCardz). Within hours, tests appeared for Control, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Black Myth: Wukong and GTA V, among more than a dozen titles.
What DLSS 5 actually is
This is not a new anti-aliasing mode or a smarter frame interpolator. Neural rendering works differently: an AI model predicts and generates pixel content directly, taking color and motion vectors as inputs and producing updated lighting and materials anchored to the original scene (VideoCardz). Officially, DLSS 5 is expected this autumn and is rumored to be RTX 50-series territory at first (17173) β which is why the leaked files caused such a stir. As 17173 notes, any game carrying the NGX DLSS stack can theoretically be injected.
Photoreal β sometimes
Injected into GTA 5, the results can be spectacular: scenes and materials are re-rendered in real time, with AI-enhanced lighting and texture detail that sometimes approaches photorealism β the closest thing yet to a "GTA 6 on PC" look for many fans (17173). The community's before/after videos are climbing the charts, with tests also hitting GTA 4, Final Fantasy 16 and Where Winds Meet.
But it's a hack, and it shows
Because nothing is natively adapted, the mod produces artifacts: flickering, texture corruption, and AI "beautification" that can deform faces and characters β critics call it an AI filter that changes the original art style (17173). The performance cost is brutal. One Cyberpunk 2077 test on an RTX 5070 saw 1440p raster drop from 138 to 68 FPS, and path tracing fall from 71 to 45 FPS (VideoCardz). On older hardware it gets worse: 17173's roundup reports RTX 3080 runs dipping to around 4 FPS β technically "working", practically unplayable.
What this means for GTA 6
The frenzy says more about hunger than technology: players are desperate for Rockstar's next-gen look, and a leaked NVIDIA library is the closest stopgap. NVIDIA's official implementation will give developers controls over intensity, color grading and masking β the official DLSS 5 may well look different from these hacked-in results (VideoCardz). And for GTA VI specifically, everything remains speculation: the game launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar has not dated a PC release, and whether a PC version would lean on DLSS 5 is anyone's guess.
Verdict
A fascinating preview of the graphics arms race β and a reminder that GTA 6's visuals are already the benchmark the whole industry is trying to catch. In the meantime, modders are having fun: "GTA 6 early" or not, the screenshots are something else.
