Will Key West be in GTA 6? The Leonida Keys are confirmed — the island at the end of them is not
The Leonida Keys are confirmed as a location in GTA 6, but Rockstar has never shown what its island chain ends on. The debate reignited on September 21 with a leaked map that appears to come from an early build and, like August's Cyberleek material, contains no Key West. The leading fan theory is that the location was planned and later cut; the sceptics answer that leaked maps routinely miss roads
The short answer
Nobody has confirmed that Key West is in GTA 6, and nobody has confirmed that it is out. What can be checked is narrower and more interesting: Rockstar's own list of Leonida locations includes the Leonida Keys — the island chain that ends, in real Florida, at Key West — but no screenshot, trailer or artwork has ever shown what sits at the western end of that chain. The community has been circling the gap for months, and on September 21 the argument finally reached the mainstream press.
What Rockstar has actually confirmed
Rockstar's GTA VI site names six locations inside the state of Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. The island chain is therefore part of the world Rockstar is selling. The list stops there: it names a region, never the landmarks inside it.
Key West is the southernmost city in the United States, at the western tip of the Florida Keys, and the community has spent years looking for its parody version in leaked material.
The leak that restarted it
Eurogamer reported on September 21 that the question had resurfaced with a map leak appearing to show an early beta version of GTA 6's map. That image is separate from the material published under the Cyberleek name in August, which did not feature Key West either — hence the theory now circulating that the location was planned and dropped later in development.
Why the regulars are not convinced
The most-repeated counter-argument comes from a Reddit thread the same day. "I don't see why they'd work so hard doing all the keys and leave out the most important one Key West," one user wrote, pointing out that GTA 4 still shipped the Jersey side of New York even so (Eurogamer). Others suggest Key West may simply have been merged into another part of the chain.
GTA6Guru logged the sceptical side in parallel: one mapper argues the island is probably still in the game but smaller than its real counterpart, that leaked maps routinely omit roads, bridges and small locations, and that a large airport nearby can make surrounding areas look emptier than they are. Others read the same image the opposite way, arguing that very little urban development sits beyond the military airbase visible in the leak. None of it is verifiable.
The map under discussion is still unverified
The image at the centre of this is the one posted on August 18 by the group calling itself Cyberleek, alongside clipped gameplay. Taken at face value, it splits Leonida into five counties — Lummox, Kelly, Leonard, Vice-Dale and Mariana — and shows a long chain of southern islands plus named spots such as Dalton Island, Gloriana Key, Catalan Key, Catalan Bay and Tequesta Retreat (The Game Post). Fan mappers disagreed immediately, and at least one of the community project's owners reportedly described the image as fake (Beebom).
Two things kept it alive anyway: the publisher's reaction — Take-Two has since filed subpoenas to unmask the leaker (the Cyberleek subpoena case) — and the fact that the leak's coastline broadly matches what fans had already reconstructed from official footage.
The community map is the other half of the picture
Because Rockstar has published no full map, the reference most fans actually use is a fan-made one. The GTA 6 Community Map reached version 16 on September 21, built on the August leak and the Extended Look, with new roads and buildings around Vice City, Key Lento, Hamlet, Capri and Ambrosia, revised coastlines, county borders and elevation data taken from a leaked heightmap, plus a 1 km grid and a total size of roughly 21,000 by 20,000 units (GTA6Guru). Those figures are measurements by players, not by Rockstar, and the map's southern labels are the community's best guesses rather than confirmed place names.
Rockstar's maps have never been one-to-one
Eurogamer's caveat is worth keeping: GTA games are intensely researched, but they are not scale replicas. GTA 4 shipped Alderney instead of New Jersey, and GTA 5 compressed Los Angeles and Southern California into Los Santos and Blaine County. Leonida is no exception — and Rockstar has already put a figure on it, describing the state as roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map with Vice City double the size of Los Santos (the official numbers). A chain of islands that skips its most famous landmass would be consistent with how these worlds are built, not an anomaly.
What would settle it
Only two things will: Rockstar publishing a complete map of Leonida, or players driving south themselves on November 19, when the game arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with no PC date announced. Eurogamer adds that the other long-running absence — GTA 6 Online — is still unannounced too. Until then, Key West stays what it has been all along: a real place, a plausible location, and a gap in a map nobody has officially seen.
