GTA VI: Rockstar completely redesigned the cars โ€” fuel, key cloning and realistic damage

The car system is being rebuilt from scratch

Four days after "An Extended Look" aired on Netflix, the wave of preview details shows no sign of slowing down. The latest batch concerns one of the franchise's most beloved pillars: cars. According to details relayed by ixbt.games from the X account gtasix_, Rockstar has completely revamped the vehicle system in GTA VI โ€” different characteristics per car, fuel, complex anti-theft protection, trunk space and new damage consequences.

Fuel, charging and the return of maintenance

The most visible change is mechanical: fuel and electric-vehicle charging are coming to the series for the first time, with refueling taking about ten seconds (ixbt.games). Pay 'n' Spray returns, nitro appears, and workshops will now have specializations. Trunks will have real volume โ€” from a motorcycle's tiny storage to a van's spacious hold โ€” which suggests cargo and delivery mechanics could matter more than ever.

Stealing cars becomes a real job

Rockstar is also making grand theft auto, well, harder. Stealing expensive vehicles will require more than a crowbar: some cars will need key cloning, and the tools to do it must be unlocked through missions for resellers (gtasix_ via ixbt.games). An in-game app called Waink will show a car's protection level, value and the equipment required to steal it. The driving model has also been almost entirely rebuilt from scratch, combining GTA IV's weight and physics with GTA V's accessibility โ€” consistent with what Eurogamer reported about driving and car-jacking becoming "more challenging".

Damage with consequences

Accidents will no longer be cosmetic. Punctured tires can lead to loss of control and rollovers, and after a serious crash a Burnout-style camera kicks in to savor the wreck (ixbt.games). There is also a police dimension: if authorities link your personal car to a crime, it can be impounded โ€” you can pay to retrieve it or hack the police impound lot.

Garages yes, houses no

Rockstar reportedly confirms that players will be able to buy garages, which will store stolen cars until they are registered โ€” but freely acquiring new hideouts and homes will not be possible. That matches the earlier rumor that property buying is being dropped from the story, fitting Jason and Lucia's life on the run.

A bigger picture

The vehicle overhaul fits the broader realism push seen across the previews: the return of six-star wanted levels, the criminal profile system and more challenging car theft (Eurogamer). Car spotters, meanwhile, are already mapping the Extended Look's roster to real-life inspirations โ€” Bravado, Declasse and Vapid still covering Dodge, Chevrolet and Ford, with Rockstar blending cues from models like the Ferrari 488 Pista, SF90 Stradale and Pininfarina Battista into a single fictional supercar (TopSpeed, GTA Wiki). All of it lands just 80 days before the November 19, 2026 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S โ€” and the details keep coming.
