Stephen Root is in Grand Theft Auto VI. The character actor said so himself, on camera, in an interview with the Associated Press published on September 13 — the first time anyone connected to the cast has confirmed their involvement on the record.
The AP clip is short and the wording is deliberately careful: Root "confirms online speculation that he's part of the cast" of Grand Theft Auto VI. It does not name a character. The interview is pegged to his awards season — at 74, he is Emmy-nominated for a second time, for Widow's Bay — the kind of setting where actors finally answer questions they have dodged for years (AP News).
Why the internet already knew
None of this surprises anyone who watched Trailer 2 in May 2025. It opens with Brian Heder calling out to Jason Duval from his car — and that voice, unmistakably Root's, was identified within hours. Fans declared themselves "99% confident" on r/GTA6, an IMDb credit linking Root to Brian Heder appeared, and Dexerto wrote up the consensus that Rockstar's silence had failed to hide (Dexerto; Reddit).
That is why the AP interview lands as a confirmation rather than a reveal. What it settles is the one thing speculation could never settle by itself: that a person who actually worked on the game is willing to say so before launch.
Who Brian Heder is
Rockstar's character page describes the man everyone expects Root to play as "a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys. Still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, Brian's been around long enough to let others do his dirty work." The studio adds that Brian lets Jason live rent-free at one of his properties — "so long as he helps with local shakedowns, and stops by for Lori's sangria once in a while."
Not a father figure, then, but the older criminal who has survived long enough to make other people take the risks. It is the lane Root has owned since the 1990s — Milton Waddams in Office Space, Monroe Fuches in Barry, Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill. He was also born in Sarasota, Florida, an hour south of the real city Vice City is modelled on, which does not hurt.
A cast Rockstar never talks about
The confirmation is notable mostly for what it says about Rockstar's communication. Across GTA VI's entire marketing cycle, the studio has never announced a single voice actor — not for Jason, not for Lucia, not for the supporting cast it named on its own website. The most bankable game of the decade has been sold with characters and no performers.
That is a reversal of the studio's own history. GTA: Vice City turned its cast into a selling point, with Ray Liotta as Tommy Vercetti alongside Burt Reynolds and Dennis Hopper, and San Andreas followed with Samuel L. Jackson. By GTA V, Rockstar had already gone quiet: the actors behind Michael, Franklin and Trevor — Ned Luke, Shawn Fonteno and Steven Ogg — only became public around the game's 2013 release. What has changed in 2026 is the leak path: with a fanbase that knows every voice in Hollywood, secrecy lasts about a day — and actors, unlike publishers, have press tours to do.

Very little about the game itself, since the role was already the community consensus, and nothing at all about the date: GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced. What has changed is the record. If Root keeps talking — and awards season gives him plenty of reasons to — the first name on GTA VI's cast list will have arrived not through a Rockstar Newswire post, but through a red carpet interview nobody had to approve.
Update — September 14: the actor named the character himself
The broadcast clip stopped one detail short. In fuller write-ups of the same Associated Press interview, recorded at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, Root goes past "part of the cast" and names the role: he voices Brian Heder, the smuggler from the Leonida Keys who employs Jason (GTA BOOM; Beebom). Until then, the name rested on voice matching, a Reddit consensus and an IMDb listing — a deduction, not a credit.
His answer to AP is a single line, the kind actors use for a question they have been dodging for years: "You're gonna see me in there."
He also explained why the character gave itself away. "It's coming out November 19, from the latest that I know of," he said. "But I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing, maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there. And there were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice." The frame of reference is his own and deliberately vague — the scene that gave the voice away, Brian Heder calling out to Jason from his car, opens Trailer 2 from May 2025 — but the mechanism is exact: a cast list assembled by ear, one familiar sitcom voice at a time. Root added that he is "so happy to be involved with it. It's an amazing thing to look at."
GTA BOOM reads the confirmation as a first for the series: it makes Brian Heder the only role inside GTA VI confirmed by the person playing it, while Jason, Lucia and the supporting cast Rockstar itself named on its website remain unattributed. The studio has still published no cast list, and its own description of the character has not changed: a veteran of the Keys smuggling trade who has survived long enough to let others do his dirty work, and who rents Jason a place to live so long as he helps with the local shakedowns.
What changes in the record is small and precise. The role was already the community's conclusion; it is now the actor's statement, with a character name attached — more than any other performer in GTA VI has offered so far. GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
